Position Overview

This local yard jockey opportunity is available with a confidential regional carrier operating a busy distribution facility in Idaho Falls. The role focuses on efficient trailer movement to support food distribution, agricultural products, and consumer goods moving throughout Eastern Idaho and into neighboring states.

Drivers will primarily work yard tractors repositioning trailers between docks, staging areas, and parking rows. Occasional road transfers to nearby terminals use day cab tractors. Shifts keep you home every night with steady work tied directly to warehouse operations along the I-15 corridor.

This position serves regional distribution networks where potato harvest, dairy, frozen foods, and retail freight keep the yard active year-round.

Typical Day as a Yard Jockey

Shifts usually start between 5:00 AM and 7:00 AM. You begin with a pre-trip inspection on your assigned yard tractor, check dispatch priorities on the tablet, and start moving inbound trailers off receiving doors so warehouse teams can keep product flowing.

Throughout the day you'll reposition loaded outbound dry vans and reefers to staging areas, pull empties into position for loading, and handle reefer units that need power or washouts. Priorities shift as warehouse production changes. You'll work closely with gate attendants, dock supervisors, and dispatch to clear congestion and maintain flow. Most days end with post-trip inspections and equipment staging before heading home.

During peak periods like harvest or holidays, expect more live loads and occasional short road runs to Pocatello or Twin Falls using a day cab.

Freight & Yard Operations

The facility handles grocery products, refrigerated and frozen foods, dairy, beverages, paper goods, and agricultural supplies. Most inbound trailers arrive from processors and national distributors. Outbound loads head to retail stores, other warehouses, and regional customers across Eastern Idaho.

Yard work is about 65% drop-and-hook movements with the rest involving live loading or unloading support. Reefers require temperature checks and proper staging. You'll verify seals, BOLs, and trailer numbers on every move to keep everything traceable.

Equipment You'll Operate

Primary Yard Tractors: Ottawa, Kalmar & Capacity spotters (2018–2023)
Road Day Cabs (Transfers): Freightliner Cascadia & Kenworth T680 (2019–2023)
Transmission: Automatic on yard tractors
Trailers: 48' & 53' dry vans and refrigerated units
Key Features: Backup cameras, LED lighting, air ride, Samsara ELD

Compensation

Hourly Rate: $25.50 – $30.00 per hour
Weekly Average: $1,180 (based on 45–50 hours)
Overtime: After 40 hours
Sign-on Bonus: $750 (paid after 30 & 90 days)

Additional pay includes detention when supporting off-site transfers, safety and attendance incentives, and shift differentials for nights.

Home Time

Home daily with most shifts completing at the Idaho Falls facility. Typical five-day work week with rotating weekend coverage based on warehouse needs. You return home every night after completing end-of-shift duties.

Local Trucking Opportunities in Idaho Falls, ID

Idaho Falls sits at a key logistics point along I-15 in Eastern Idaho. The area supports strong freight demand from potato processing, dairy operations, frozen food production, and retail distribution. Carriers need reliable yard and local drivers to keep trailers moving between warehouses, processors, and outbound routes to Pocatello, Twin Falls, and Salt Lake City.

Yard jockey positions like this one provide steady local work without the long weeks away from home common in OTR roles. Drivers familiar with the region know the importance of efficient dock flow during harvest when agricultural freight surges. I-15 serves as the main north-south artery while US-20 and I-86 connect key production areas.

CDL-A drivers in the Idaho Falls area benefit from consistent year-round activity. Warehouse and distribution operations rarely slow down because of the mix of food production and consumer goods. Local positions often include overtime during peak periods, making them attractive for drivers who want predictable home time and solid earnings without crossing the country.

This confidential carrier opportunity focuses on the operational backbone of regional distribution — keeping the yard organized so regional drivers and customer deliveries stay on schedule. If you have solid backing skills and prefer staying close to home, this role offers stable work supporting Eastern Idaho's key industries.
