About the Operation

Local container movement between Birmingham rail ramps and nearby warehouses or plants requires carriers that can match chassis availability to daily train releases. This mid-sized regional fleet concentrates on short-haul intermodal cycles rather than over-the-road runs. Drivers work the multi-party chain of railroad, chassis pool, shipper and receiver, handling gate procedures and documentation that keep containers moving within Central Alabama. The focus stays on predictable local work supported by company chassis and a Birmingham maintenance base.

Common Questions

Q: How many container moves happen on a typical shift? ▼
Two to four productive moves are common when equipment and appointments line up. Rail or customer congestion can reduce the count.
Q: Does the driver unload the container? ▼
No. The driver positions the equipment; warehouse or receiving staff handle the cargo.
Q: What if the container is not released at the rail ramp? ▼
Call dispatch. They can switch the driver to another available container, assign an empty reposition, or revise the appointment.
Q: Can the tractor stay overnight at a customer? ▼
Only at approved company, customer or container-yard spots. Normal expectation is return to the Birmingham terminal.
Q: Are brand-new CDL graduates accepted? ▼
Rarely as first choice. Independent rail-yard and chassis work favors drivers who already have practical tractor-trailer experience.
Q: How is detention tracked? ▼
Arrival and release times go into the ELD or dispatch system. Pay starts after two documented hours when approved.

Birmingham CDL-A Market

Birmingham’s CDL-A market mixes local delivery, LTL, dedicated, industrial, tanker and intermodal carriers. Drivers can choose among hourly, mileage and activity-based packages, so an intermodal role must deliver credible weekly earnings and reliable home time to stay competitive. Local Class A rates commonly sit from the low-to-mid $20s into the $30 range. Carriers that control chassis pools and serve rail ramps continue to need drivers who understand gate procedures and equipment interchange. Overall supply is competitive rather than critically short, yet specialized intermodal capacity remains in steady demand.

Birmingham Freight Landscape

Birmingham sits at the intersection of major interstate and rail freight corridors serving Central Alabama. Containerized freight moves between rail facilities, distribution centers and industrial customers throughout the metro and nearby towns such as Bessemer, McCalla, Pelham and Trussville. Metals, automotive manufacturing, food and beverage, healthcare logistics and construction materials generate steady volume. I-20, I-59, I-65, I-22 and the I-459 bypass keep containers circulating even when central traffic builds. Seasonal retail peaks and manufacturing cycles create temporary surges, while the underlying industrial base keeps intermodal freight active year-round.
