The U.S. trucking and brokerage industry has lost one of its quiet builders and true pioneers. Roy Eugene “Gene” Christenson, a lifelong trucking professional and respected industry leader, passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026, at the age of 87 in Springfield, Missouri.
Gene’s trucking journey began early — at just 14 years old, hauling feed for his father and local farmers. Over the years, he hauled agricultural freight, tanker fuel, and flatbed loads, gaining firsthand experience that would later shape his leadership style. In 1961, he joined Tom Inman Trucking in Tulsa, Oklahoma, running protein loads to the West Coast and returning with produce.
By 1965, Gene moved into dispatch and operations, helping grow Tom Inman Trucking from four trucks to more than 200. In 1978, he founded Christenson Transportation, later rebranded as CS Carrier Service, becoming an early pioneer of the modern freight brokerage model during deregulation.
In 1994, Gene and his son Don launched Christenson Transportation as a dry van carrier. Even after decades in leadership, Gene spent 11 more years working as a dispatcher, staying close to drivers until retiring in 2005.
“Provide a safe place for your employees to earn a living for their families, and the business will take care of itself.”
Outside trucking, Gene enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, and motor coaching across the U.S. and Canada. He also had a passion for scuba diving, which once left him stranded by a hurricane in Belize, leading to a second business producing resort furniture from native hardwoods.
Gene Christenson leaves behind a legacy of integrity, leadership, and respect for drivers. He will be deeply missed by his family, former employees, dispatchers, brokers, and countless truck drivers whose working lives were shaped by his decisions.
????️ Rest in peace, Gene. The road you helped build carries on.
