Michigan Ends Remaining Spring Weight Restrictions

Seasonal frost laws are officially lifted across state trunkline highways, resuming standard legal loading limits for commercial carriers and heavy-duty freight operations.

FROST LAW REMOVAL

Beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, the State of Michigan will officially remove the final seasonal weight restrictions that have been in place across state trunkline highways. All remaining frost law restrictions on highways carrying Interstate, US, and M-route designations will be lifted for the 2026 season.

This allows many in OTR CDL-A jobs across the USA to resume standard legal weight limits on affected state-maintained routes throughout Michigan.

INFRASTRUCTURE PROTECTION

Seasonal weight restrictions are implemented every spring to help protect road infrastructure during the freeze-thaw cycle, when warmer temperatures weaken pavement and roadbeds. During this period, axle weight limits are temporarily reduced to minimize damage caused by heavy commercial traffic.

Drivers and fleet managers can use our truck driver salary calculator to estimate how these seasonal fluctuations and full-capacity returns impact their weekly and monthly earnings.

FREIGHT EFFICIENCY

With the restrictions ending statewide, trucking fleets and those in owner-operator CDL-A trucking jobs USA can begin operating under normal loading conditions again on Michigan trunkline highways.

"The lifting of restrictions is expected to improve freight efficiency, reduce routing limitations, and support increased shipping activity heading into the summer construction and produce seasons."

This return to capacity is a boon for those in regional CDL-A truck driving jobs who often juggle multiple stops and varying load weights across state lines.

STATE VS. LOCAL ROADS

While state highway restrictions are being removed, local drivers in local CDL-A truck driving jobs should remain aware that county road commissions and municipal public works departments may continue enforcing their own seasonal weight limits.

These local restrictions do not always align with state schedules and may remain active in some areas depending on road conditions. Motor carriers are advised to continue checking posted signage and verify local regulations before dispatching fully loaded equipment.

CARRIER RESOURCES

Michigan trucking companies and interstate carriers can find updated restriction maps, route information, and truck operator resources through the official MDOT trucking portal. The state’s all-season truck routes are clearly identified helping drivers avoid unnecessary delays.
