Frequently Asked Questions

Do I ever leave the yard for deliveries?

How intense is the workload during peak hours?

During grocery and produce rush periods, trailer movement is constant. Expect steady assignments with minimal idle time.

Is backing experience required?

Yes, strong backing skills are important since most moves involve tight docks, blindside setups, and confined yard lanes.

What kind of trailers will I handle?

Primarily dry vans and refrigerated trailers supporting retail distribution and agricultural shipments.

Are shifts fixed or rotating?

Most drivers are assigned a consistent shift, but weekend or night rotations may be required depending on facility demand.

How is performance measured?

Metrics include trailer move efficiency, on-time dock placement, safety compliance, and communication with dispatch teams.

💼 Career Opportunities

Starting as a yard driver in Fresno’s logistics network can open more doors than most drivers expect. Many operators begin in yard roles to sharpen backing precision and learn how large-scale distribution systems actually function behind the scenes. Over time, experienced drivers often transition into higher-paying local shuttle routes moving trailers between nearby facilities along CA-99 or I-5 corridors. There’s also a pathway into dedicated retail or grocery delivery positions where drivers handle short regional lanes with predictable schedules. Some choose to specialize further—moving into refrigerated freight tied to agriculture, or stepping into dispatch coordination roles inside the same warehouses they started in. Facilities in the Central Valley are expanding, and with that comes demand for lead yard drivers, trainers, and safety coordinators who understand flow management and dock timing. If you're consistent and reliable, it’s not unusual to move up into supervisory yard roles overseeing trailer staging operations. For drivers who eventually want to get back on the road, yard experience provides a strong foundation for regional CDL jobs with better route selection and steady freight contracts.
