Frequently Asked Questions

How many stops per shift should I expect?

Most days include 2–4 warehouse moves, depending on traffic and load timing across the metro.

Roughly 70–80% is drop-and-hook, but some facilities still require live unloads.

Do drivers deal with heavy Chicago traffic?

Yes, especially around I-290 and I-90/94, but dispatch plans routes to minimize peak congestion.

What kind of freight is most common?

Mainly retail goods, e-commerce shipments, and palletized consumer products moving between DCs.

Are trucks assigned or slip-seated?

Mix of both—some drivers keep assigned units, others rotate depending on shift coverage.

Can I pick my start time?

There’s some flexibility based on seniority and route demand, especially between early AM and mid-day shifts.

💼 Career Opportunities

This Chicago-based CDL-A role is more than just local delivery—it’s an entry point into one of the densest freight ecosystems in the U.S. Drivers who start in short-haul distribution often move into dedicated contracts with major retailers or e-commerce networks operating out of Joliet and Elwood. As you gain familiarity with high-volume freight lanes, opportunities open up in route optimization, dispatch coordination, and even yard management roles. Many drivers transition into higher-paying dedicated lanes with consistent customers, reducing variability in schedules. Others move into regional Midwest routes covering Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin for increased weekly miles. There’s also room to step into specialized freight like intermodal container hauling or hazmat-certified loads, both of which are heavily active in the Chicago market. Experienced drivers who understand the rhythm of Chicago traffic and warehouse operations are highly valued, often leading to trainer positions or leadership roles within fleets. If you're looking for a stable starting point with room to grow into better routes, more pay, or specialized freight, this position provides that path without leaving the local market.
