Frequently Asked Questions

How physical is flatbed work in this role?

You’ll regularly handle tarping, chaining, and securing steel loads at job sites, especially in active construction zones.

Do I need prior flatbed experience?

Preferred but not required—drivers with general CDL-A experience can transition with on-the-job securement training.

How many miles per week can I expect?

Typically 1,200–1,800 regional miles depending on construction demand and load scheduling.

What kind of freight variability should I expect?

Loads shift daily between steel, machinery, and building materials based on active project needs.

Is tarping always required?

Most open-deck loads require tarping, especially lumber and weather-sensitive steel components.

How predictable is home time?

Regional routing allows frequent home returns, though schedules can shift during peak construction phases.

💼 Career Opportunities

This Birmingham flatbed CDL-A role opens doors to long-term progression inside the construction freight ecosystem. Drivers often begin on regional steel and equipment hauls and later transition into more specialized freight lanes such as oversized loads, dedicated industrial contracts, or high-value machinery transport. As experience grows, opportunities expand into lead driver positions, trainer roles for new flatbed operators, or assignment to dedicated accounts serving major fabrication plants and infrastructure contractors across the Southeast. Because Birmingham sits at the intersection of I-65, I-20, and I-59 freight corridors, experienced drivers can also move into higher-paying regional lanes covering Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, and Mobile. Some drivers eventually shift into owner-operator setups or specialized heavy-haul divisions. The skill set built here—load securement, route adaptability, and construction logistics awareness—transfers directly into premium freight segments where demand stays consistent year-round.
