Michigan Enacts Spring Weight Restrictions on State Highways Starting February 17, 2026
Commercial drivers in Michigan should prepare for seasonal changes as MDOT enforces annual spring weight restrictions to protect roads during thawing season.
Why Spring Weight Restrictions Are Necessary
As winter ice thaws, saturated roadbeds become weak and vulnerable. Heavy trucks can cause:
- Pavement cracking
- Structural damage
- Pothole formation
- Surface deformation from heavy axle weights
Areas Affected
Restrictions cover all state trunkline highways marked M, I, or US from:
- Indiana and Ohio borders north to US-10 in Ludington
- East along US-10 to US-127 in Clare County
- North on US-127 to M-61
- East on M-61 to US-23 in Standish
Routes and Limits
MDOT defines two categories:
- All-Season Routes: Green/gold routes with no reduction in legal axle weights.
- Seasonal Routes: Red routes with reduced axle limits (25% on concrete, 35% on asphalt) and 35 mph speed limits.
Permit Rules During Restrictions
- Extended permits for oversize loads remain valid.
- Single-trip permits will NOT be issued for overweight, >14ft wide, >11 axles, or >150ft combinations.
Planning for Truck Drivers
During spring weight season, expect:
- Route adjustments to remain compliant
- Slower transit on restricted roads
- Increased enforcement activity
- Potential fines or citations for violations
Always check the latest MDOT Truck Operators Map before entering Michigan to avoid restrictions and fines during spring thaw season.
